What is the purpose of the role?

As part of the Water Resources & Process Modelling team, the Water Resources Analyst will undertake water resources system and hydrological modelling to support our regulatory submissions, as well as the assessment of our water resources and operational performance. The role includes working with Strategy, Control and Production teams across the business to ensure we have consistent data and information to model and assess the current and future performance of our water supply capability and security of supply.

What makes this role unique?

This is an excellent opportunity to apply and develop your skills in water resources system modelling. We are looking for an individual who is able to work independently as well as working with and supporting our team of water resources modellers, hydrogeologists and water treatment process modellers. You will be undertaking deployable output analysis as well as climate change impact, outage and headroom analysis, supporting the assessment of our overall regulatory supply demand balance and security of supply. In addition, you will support the modelling and reporting of our water resource position to enable business decision-making on risks to water supply and customer service across London and the Thames Valley. To deliver these outputs you will be supporting the maintenance and development of our water resource modelling tools to ensure that they continue to be fit for purpose.

What will this role involve?

In this role you will:

Work within a multi-disciplinary team to support the security of water supply for our customers through the modelling of our current and future water resources across London and the Thames Valley.

Support the regular assessment of our water supply capability for annual regulatory report submissions and Water Resource Management Plans, specifically the calculation of our water resource zone deployable outputs and climate change impacts.

You will also coordinate the collation and support the analysis of water supply outage data, including assessment of the benefits of asset investments, and support the modelling of uncertainty in the supply and demand components to calculate target headroom.

Investigate a range of potential future water resource options, including inter-basin transfers, to establish their supply capability during historical droughts, including stochastic analysis, as well as the impact of climate change on their supply capability.

Assess and update the resilience of our water resource zones, particularly their vulnerability to droughts of varying severity, using industry-leading methods.

Support assessment of our water situation, and risks to customer supply, by undertaking water resources system analysis using our WARMS2 model.

You will support water abstraction and treatment decision-making on the performance management of our operational water supply assets during normal, dry weather and drought conditions.

Maintain and develop our water resource modelling tools to ensure that they continue to be fit for purpose for the management and evaluation of water resources and our supply demand balance.

What are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have water resources and hydrology experience, including the use, and ideally, the development of mathematical models. Experience of working within the water industry on water resources management would be an advantage. You will have a strong analytical background with an advanced knowledge of Excel, with experience of using R being an advantage, and the ability to integrate diverse water resources and supply data to deliver insight into our operational and system performance. You will have the ability to communicate data analysis and modelling outcomes to support their translation into asset performance decisions. You’ll need to be proactive, with the ability to work confidently with technical practitioners from our environmental regulator, and also the ability to communicate and inform key stakeholders, up to senior manager level when required.
