What is the purpose of the role?

In this essential role, you will be the company's expert on waste management, providing technical advice and regulatory support on all aspects of waste management across the business. You will work with the Environment Agency, operational teams and our contractors to ensure full compliance with waste management regulations and waste related environmental permit requirements.

What makes this role unique?

You will be a key member of a small dedicated team of environmental permitting and regulatory technical specialists with your role focusing on waste management. This is a newly created role within the team, so you will have the unique opportunity to take ownership and develop the role to define your priorities and programme of work using your own expertise. This is an opportunity to work with multiple teams across the business to promote awareness of waste management legislation and to ensure the statutory requirements are understood and complied with. This is vital since compliance with legislation and permits is a key part of our Environmental Management System which provides confidence to our customers, stakeholders and board members that we are actively working to reduce our effect on the environment and be legally compliant with all statutory and regulatory requirements.

What will this role involve?

Keep up to date on changes in waste management legislation and interpret the impact on the company's assets.

Prepare responses to regulators as appropriate Maintain the legal register with respect to waste management and communicate the requirements to front line operational teams in a way that relates to their activity

Work with the environmental permitting delivery manager to embed requirements into site operating manuals

Compile company waste management returns, ensuring data capture and records are complete, timely and accurate Monitor the company's adherence to waste management regulations, including leading the annual self-certification process for Waste Management

Define technical requirements for audits and undertake them as required, for the purpose of proactively identifying risks to be addressed to ensure or improve compliance.

Work with operational teams and contractors to put in place action plans to address issues and risks

Work with the wider business to develop appropriate training materials for site managers and operators

Provide ad-hoc technical advice on waste and contaminated land regulatory issues such as the waste disposal process for redundant assets/sites, support for potential or actual compliance issues and suitable text for waste contracts.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking an individual who has detailed knowledge and demonstrable working experience of UK and European environmental legislation relevant to waste management and contaminated land. To be successful in this role, you will likely have a degree in a relevant discipline; have a minimum of 5 years' experience in a waste management role and ideally have an appropriate professional membership or be working towards one. The ability to interpret complex legislation and articulate it in a simple way both verbally and in writing is essential for this role. Knowledge of sewage treatment works process and/or incineration/pyrolysis is desirable, although the ability to adapt & apply waste management expertise to this specialism and new situations is just as important. We are looking for someone who is a team player, resilient and confident as you will be working with regulators, operators and contractors. Contracts management experience would be an advantage. Due to the nature of the role, a full driving licence is required. You will be required to travel often to operational sites within the Thames Water Region, most notably to our East London key assets.

Thames Water information and salary details

This role will be based at Clearwater Court, Reading. We are offering a salary of up to 43,000.00, depending on skills and experience.
