What is the purpose of the role?
The Head of Platform Architecture is accountable for all of the underlying platforms used by Thames Water and also the business use for each. This person will lead a team split between Enabling Platform Architects and Business Platform Architects. The Enabling Platform Architecture team creates and owns the underlying technical architecture, whilst the Business Platform Architecture Team are defining the use of technology for the business and engaged through the life cycle of projects. The Head of Platform Architecture is also responsible for creating the Cloud Factory including the Vision and Strategy. The Head of Platform Architecture will be proficient in cloud environments and making cost effective use of them, implementing SaaS, micro services deployment, agile development methodology and DevOps.

The Platform Architecture team will also work with the IS Engagement and Delivery teams (internal and external) to design and communicate architectures and high-level structures to enable and guide the design and development of integrated solutions that meet current and future business needs.
What will this role involve?
Technology Strategy & Roadmap:
Build and maintain a versatile and structured platform architecture.
Partner with and influence senior business leaders to understand where Platform Architecture can drive alignment to business objectives and help deliver on company strategy through appropriate use of technology.
Work closely with CTO & wider IT leadership to define strategic requirements for Enterprise Architecture and processes.
Responsible for defining the Application, Technology Roadmap and Reference Architectures for the future Infrastructure for Thames Water that underpin and deliver the overall Technology Strategy.
Identify opportunities and drive the reduction of TCO across the existing Infrastructure and Hosting relationships.
Governance & Design Authority:
Inform and influence technical decisions made at governance boards and design authorities.
Perform Architecture Impact Assessments for technology within the domain, to help size and shape ideas and initiatives and an early stage.
Assure throughout the project delivery lifecycle that individual solutions are fit for purpose in their application of technology and align with the overall strategy.
Expert for the evolution of the Application and Service Strategy for the Thames Water estate.
Ensure architecture roadmap aligns with service strategy and meets required service level and criticality.
Attend Service Reviews:
Understand the business, operational and technical context of applications and infrastructure within the estate.
Demonstrate thought leadership on specific topics and promote knowledge sharing across the architecture community.
What are we looking for?
We are keen to see candidates you are ideally be educated to degree level, BSc or equivalent. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be fully experienced at dealing with stakeholders and 3rd party delivery partners. You will have significant experience as a Technical, Product, Solution Architect or System Design Authority. Preferred previous experience within the utility industry or large, complex enterprises and working within an agile environment. Candidates will have extensive architecture methodologies, principles and frameworks, ideally TOGAF are required as well as IT architecture experience and a deep understanding of data and information as well as emerging Technologies (IoT & connected Devices) is highly desirable. You will need experience of using Microsoft Azure, transforming on premise landscape to Cloud & Saas landscape, MicroServices and component Architecture, have strong SAP experience and have practical experience of defining technology domain roadmaps. Ability to explain complex problems in a simple and effective manner is essential.
Thames Water information and salary details
This role is offering a salary of circa £84,000 to £90,000 and will be based at our offices in Reading. On top of our competitive salary package, you will also receive a competitive bonus, car allowance, private healthcare and an industry leading pension scheme. We also offer 2 paid volunteering days per year.
