What is the purpose of the role?
The purpose of this role is to develop and maintain a first class management accounting, reporting and business partnering service in line with business objectives and changes to financial and regulatory reporting frameworks. Collaborating with a range of senior stakeholders and alliance partners, you will drive continuous improvement in monthly reporting, forecast and budgeting processes for Water Networks, in this ever changing environment. This role has a balance of transactional management accounting with some wider business partnering duties so previous experience in a similar role would be strongly preferred.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Thames Water performing a critical role as a member of our highly professional and supportive finance team. Due to the nature of the water industry, no two days are the same so you will have an exposure to a range of scenarios and a great role to further develop in. You will also have exposure to senior management as well as ensuring that the highest levels of data integrity are upheld and adherence to deadlines is maintained. Additionally, you will form part of the Infrastructure Alliance which comprises of an alliance between Thames Water, Kier, Clancy Docwra, Morrison Utility Services and J Murphy & Sons thus enabling you to gain exposure to stakeholders within these organisations.
What will this role involve?
The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the Finance manager with ad hoc information requests and will be accountable for all of the management accounts for your business area.
Additionally, you will be:
Working with the business / operational teams to provide financial support and analysis to support operational decisions.
Ensuring performance commentary includes actions required to maintain or improve future financial performance.
Transactional accounting of assigned cost centres to ensure compliance with both management and statutory accounting standards.
Month/year end close procedures, cost accruals, journals and balance sheet reconciliations.
Timely and accurate production of management accounting information (including budgeting and forecasting).
Assisting the Finance Manager in setting a plan that achieves operational and financial objectives.
Identify trends in the data and using them to support future forecast and budget purposes.
Support the transformation/ efficiency initiatives, including agreeing and tracking projected costs and benefits against actual results.
Identify and deliver continual improvements in monthly reporting, forecasting and budgeting processes.
Build and maintain an extensive network of relationships with the wider finance teams in Thames Water and the partner organisations.
What are we looking for?
To be considered for this role, you will ideally be a qualified accountant (CIMA, ACCA or ACA) however someone with equivalent experience will also be considered. You will have gained experience in a similar role, preferable within a heavily regulated environment or from a utilities organisation. A commercial approach to this role is key, and a proactive and self-driven attitude is also crucial. If you have gained demonstrable experience in project accounting, this would be beneficial however not essential. Due to the nature of the role, you will actively drive and seek process improvements and will be an advanced Excel user. You will have a high level of business acumen and will have gained experience of reporting and where necessary, influencing senior business stakeholders.
Thames Water information and salary details
This role is paying a salary of £38,250 – circa £45,000 depending on skills and experience and will be based out of our Kemble Court site in Reading.
