What is the purpose of the role?
Working within the data value area, this is an exciting opportunity to join the customer programmes team, where information analysed and gathered from our smart meter network. This industry leading infrastructure generates over 6 million data points a day and need to be converted into information, insight and drive actions within the business. As we continue to roll out smart metering and other network devices such as acoustic loggers over the next ten years this is a chance to be involved in an unexplored area within a growing industry. As part of a new team this is an opportunity to apply expertise in data preparation, statistics, modelling and analytics to investigate complex problems and extract insight from data, in order to support decision makers.
What makes this role unique?
This is an exciting opportunity to analyse and display the benefits of a metering and acoustic logging programmes using data from our growing estate of meters and is newly created within the business. You will be the lead data scientist our area and will have the opportunity to help build the cloud based environment; not only in customer programmes but in collaboration with the whole of Thames Water. There is also the opportunity to interact with other data scientists from around the business to share knowledge and build this community. The findings and presentations you put together will shape how we monitor and review contractor outputs and will demonstrate the benefit of our bulk metering and acoustic logging programmes.
What will this role involve?
Acting as the senior data scientist and the ‘expert’ in the team, responsibilities are:
Using of appropriate software and hardware to store, extract, process and analyse data.
Demonstrable cost benefit and increased analytics capability.
Use of valid statistical techniques to analyse data, design and evaluate experiments.
Develop, test and evaluate solutions to fulfil business requirements.
Line manage a data science intern on a 12 month placement rotation.
Collation and analysis of Thames Water and external data sets and assembly into models.
Visualise and communicate data and findings to enable data-driven decision making.
Using technical expertise to steer business strategy in areas of data and analytics.
Working closely with data analysts across the business to share best practice and data science knowledge and understanding.
What are we looking for?
To be considered for this role we are looking for someone who has a wealth of data science experience and you will have a degree in Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Programming or within a related subject. Previous experience with Python, R and SQL languages as well as the Azure platform is crucial. Knowledge of the application of statistical modelling, machine learning and other data science techniques is required. You will have gained experience of working with large data sets and it is essential that you have an analytical mind and a self-driven approach to work. You will have strong communication skills and will be naturally inquisitive with the ability to work in an ever changing environment. Demonstrable experience of using techniques to move a data function forward, would be highly desirable. The ideal candidate will be confident using new IT systems and you must be an experienced Microsoft Excel user.
Thames Water information and salary details
This role which can be based out of either Clearwater Court in Reading or Bulman Court in Langley, and is offering a salary of up to £50,000 depending on skills and experience. Due to the nature of the role, some travel to either of these sites will be required.
