What is the purpose of the role?

The Business Platform Architect covering IT-4-IT owns the definition, governance and roadmap for the platforms that support to the internal IT requirements, including those for End User Compute (EUC) for this water utilities company. The solutions built on these platforms will be used by Thames and partner individuals, so all solutions will need to be accessible and useable. This person will be the expert for the services required to run the IT department, and also those of our End Users. This person will collate an understanding of the technical requirements and evangelising with the business. The Business Platform Architect for IT-4-IT is the overall end to end solution owner of the applications, systems and platform for enterprise wide requirements and also manages the technical relationship with suppliers. The Business Platform Architect works across multiple programmes and projects to ensure business change is delivered in a coordinated and efficient way with the successful delivery of technology initiatives. The Business Platform Architect for IT-4-IT needs to have experience in Microsoft & SAP environments and mobile applications. This experience needs to be from a company of a similar size, scale and complexity.

What will this role involve?

Technology Strategy & Roadmap:

Responsible for defining the Technology Roadmap and Reference Architectures for the IT-4-IT and the overall Technology Strategy for these.

Identify opportunities and drive the reduction of TCO.

Define and govern capacity and financial forecasts across the domain.

Governance & Design Authority:

Inform and influence technical decisions made at governance boards and design authorities.

Perform architecture impact assessments for technology within the domain, to help size and shape ideas and initiatives at an early stage.

Ensure roadmaps provide at least N-1 versions.

Assure throughout the project delivery lifecycle that individual solutions are fit for purpose and align with the overall strategy.

Contribute to the definition of architecture principles, policies, standards and patterns.

Technical Owner:

Expert for the evolution of systems and platforms within IT-4-IT.

Understand the business, operational and technical context.

Manages the architectural relationship with suppliers and provide guidance on the technical direction.

Provide points of view on specific topics.

Leadership:

Demonstrate thought leadership and promote knowledge sharing.

Collaborate with other Platform Architects to ensure the overall integrity of domain roadmaps.

Understand industry best practice and engage with strategic partners.

Mentoring and supporting other members of the CTO organisation and the wider architecture community.

What are we looking for?

You will ideally be educated to degree level BSc or equivalent. You will have significant experience as a Technical, Product, Solution Architect or System Design Authority with strong knowledge of architecture methodologies, principles and frameworks, ideally TOGAF. You will have practical experience of defining technology domain roadmaps and working with 3rd party delivery partners. You will have extensive year’s practical IT architecture experience and are fully experienced at dealing with stakeholders. You will be known to be a proficient and effective communicator. Your previous experience will be within the utility industry or large, complex enterprises and have experience of different IT delivery approaches (waterfall, agile, lean…).

Thames Water information and salary details

This role is based at our offices in Reading. We are offering a salary of between 56,000 and 84,000 dependant on skills and experience. On top of our competitive salary package, you will also receive a competitive bonus, car allowance, private healthcare and an industry leading pension scheme. We also offer 2 paid volunteering days per year.
