Who are we?

Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater company. We make a daily difference to our 15 million customers by supplying 2.6 billion litres of water through 32,000 km’s of pipes, to keep taps flowing and toilets flushing. We are an essential service and have operated throughout the Covid19 pandemic.

At Thames Water, every one of our actions, big and small, matters every day. Water is essential to daily life, and that means our business is always open.

What you will be doing

Many of our customers obtain an authorised standpipe from our supplier and connect to our network safely and legally, ensuring that all water usage is accounted for. The Standpipe Investigators' role is to detect offenders who do not obtain an authorised standpipe and educate and engage with them to ensure they understand and comply and ultimately work with our legal partners to pursue prosecution with offenders who continue to abuse the clean water network.

The role is part of a dynamic, fast-paced team focused on ensuring Thames Water protects our clean water network from illegal standpipe connections. In this role, you’ll be working with the Illegal Connections Manager to investigate instances of illegal standpipe use on our clean water network and applying the relevant enforcement legislation.

The role will require you to travel the entirety of the Thames Water clean network area in a company vehicle, and a flexible approach to our working hours is crucial.  Core working hours are 08.00 am – 16.00 pm Monday to Friday, and operational needs will often require you to be on a site by 07.00 am. The working week is split between office-based work and operational duties.

We’re looking for you to:

  • Be adept in evidence gathering and court file preparation including taking personal statements
  • Gather evidence in compliance with PACE, CPIA, and Water Industry Act governance
  • Deliver confident presentations to internal and external stakeholders
  • Take ownership of investigations, being curious to fully understand the breach and identify the best solution to resolve
  • Efficiently manage your workload and be self-motivated and enthusiastic to take accountability for your role while working accurately and flexibly within a busy team
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to clearly interact with our customers
  • Have strong attention to detail and the ability to write clear and grammatically correct letters, correspondence, and reports
  • Have experience of lone working and a willingness to approach offenders in a safe and non-confrontational way
  • Have a full driving licence as some of the work will be field based within the Thames Water area

What’s in it for you?

This is an exciting opening for someone to police our clean water network ensuring our infrastructure remains safe and intact and water used is accounted for which directly impacts our leakage figures.

Our competitive salary package includes an excellent contributory pension, 26 days holiday per year increasing to 30 with the length of service, and a wider benefits scheme.

We’re proud of the positive ways of working we have adopted during the pandemic. We want to create a more flexible and dynamic environment so all our colleagues can thrive. For our office-based roles, we are moving to a hybrid approach where we will provide options around working from our offices, our operational sites, and our home dependent on role/team/individual. This will be discussed during the assessment process.

Thames Water is a unique, rewarding, and diverse place to work. If you join our team, you’ll enjoy fast-tracked career opportunities, flexible working arrangements, and unparalleled benefits. We’re also proud to be an equal opportunity employer, Stonewall Diversity Champion, and Disability Confident Leader and we are a Times Top 50 Employer for Women.
