What you will be doing

As the Environmental Incident Advisor, you will be part of a busy team and assist the Environmental Incident Team’s main objective to minimise the impact of Thames Water’s operations on the environment. The role is a secondment/fixed term contract until October 2022.

This is a key position within Thames Water where you will investigate and report on potential pollution incidents, extract event learning, and assist with the compilation of Enforcement Undertakings (EUs) and prosecutions.

The role also will involve working with the legal team to produce environmental impact statements in relation to historical pollution incidents. This high-profile role offers variety and exposure to senior management and to different teams.

The day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Supply and analyse information to satisfy the complex needs of the team and external clients
  • Investigate significant pollution incidents and prepare incident review reports
  • Interpret scientific reports and data regarding environmental impact
  • Investigate all pollution incidents to ensure they are recorded correctly with the regulator and write challenge documents where anomalies are identified
  • Design and deliver technical solutions as needed and assist the team to implement successfully
  • Support the legal department with the provision of reports and statements, mitigation, and defence evidence, through interrogation of company systems and records
  • Improve internal communications across our operations in respect of environmental issues, supporting the provision of advice and direction via training, presentations, and reports
  • Coach and assist others in your area of expertise
  • Represent the company in meeting with stakeholders to build awareness externally, regulate their activities or maintain the reputation of the Thames Water brand
  • Engage and liaise with the Environmental Agency in respect to live and historical pollution incidents
  • Undertake field activities such as supervising contractors on-site as appropriate, reviewing contractor risk assessments and Health & Safety accordingly

We’re looking for you to:

  • Be educated to degree or higher-level qualification in an environmental or science discipline (or equivalent)
  • Have previous experience from working in a similar role or industry
  • Be knowledgeable in Environmental Legislation and/or Regulations
  • Be adept in project management and working to deadlines
  • Have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Deliver exceptional service through a passionate and positive approach, taking accountability for your role while working accurately and flexibly within a busy team
  • Have excellent communication, both written and verbal, along with strong social skills, to clearly interact with our customers and stakeholders
  • Travel will be required around Thames Water’s catchment area and therefore a full driving licence is necessary
