Who are we?

Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater company. We make a daily difference to our 15 million customers by supplying 2.6 billion litres of water through 32,000 km’s of pipes, to keep taps flowing and toilets flushing. We are an essential service and have operated throughout the Covid19 pandemic.

At Thames Water, every one of our actions, big and small, matters every day. Water is essential to daily life, and that means our business is always open.

What you’ll be doing

This is an exciting opportunity leading the solar PV and storage programme within Thames Water Ventures Renewable Energy Team. The role will be tasked with whole-life management of opportunities from initiation through financing, delivery and active in-life commercial management and will be accountable for delivering a pipeline of solar projects running into hundreds of MW.

This role will deliver requirements for the regulated business and long-term asset strategy but also look at 3rd party commercial opportunities and partnerships. This is an opportunity for an experienced individual who had a proven track record in identifying, developing and delivering solar PV energy schemes and who thrives in a ‘start-up’ environment. It will also provide the opportunity to develop some of the largest floating solar projects in Europe.

This role is instrumental in a dynamic and a fast-paced environment, so the successful candidate will be comfortable working under pressure with exceptional stakeholder engagement and management skills. The ideal candidate will be someone who comes with 8-10 years of solar PV and storage development experience and has previously managed the development of a comparable potential renewable energy portfolio and can bring this vision to life in the UK’s largest water company. The role will report to the Director of Renewables.

We’re looking for you to do

  • Develop a pipeline of utility scale solar PV projects across Thames Water Utilities sites, with the aim of achieving 150MW by 2025, including the largest floating solar projects in Europe
  • Cover the full development cycle from greenfield though development to construction and operations, and put in place an approach to portfolio management
  • Manage relationships with site managers, grid operators, regulators and – where relevant – third party off-takers (or importers) and the supply chain
  • Secure the supply chain and external EPC contractors to construct and operate projects, developing strong relationships with the internal construction managers
  • Explore the use of batteries for Thames Water’s use or for third parties

What Skills are we looking for?

  • Educated to degree standard or equivalent qualification
  • Strong experience in renewable / solar PV / battery development process and portfolio management with demonstrable benefit delivery.
  • Strong technical understanding of renewable energy, especially solar PV and batteries. Experience of new/floating solar technologies would be advantageous.
  • Strong and demonstrable numeric and analytical skills, able to link financial and non-financial data
  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to produce material timely, and at a high quality including executive/director level audiences
  • Able to deliver material improvements and prepare consistently high-quality outputs quickly within a start-up environment

What’s in it for you?

Our competitive salary & package includes a generous bonus scheme, car allowance, an excellent contributory pension, 26 days holiday per year increasing to 30 with the length of service and a wider benefits scheme.

We’re proud of the positive ways of working we have adopted during the pandemic. We want to create a more flexible and dynamic environment so all our colleagues can thrive. For our office-based roles we’re moving to a hybrid approach where we’ll provide options around working from our offices, our operational sites and home dependent on role/team/individual. This will be discussed during the assessment process.
