The Learning Consultant drives performance improvement by identifying learning needs and delivering targeted, impactful solutions aligned with Thames Water’s strategic goals.
Acting as the primary contact for training requests, the role ensures learning initiatives are effective, consistent, and integrated across the business. Through expert consulting, analysis, and innovative design, the Learning Consultant supports skills development, enhances business outcomes, and champions a joined-up, outcome-focused learning culture.
What you’ll be doing as a Learning Consultant
- Engage proactively with stakeholders to deeply understand business challenges, distinguishing between perceived wants and actual needs
- Develop a tailored learning plan for each function, actively manage and update it on an ongoing basis.
- Lead the performance consulting and learning needs analysis (LNA) process to qualify learning requirements stemming from strategic initiatives, larger business-as-usual (BAU) changes, or improvement efforts.
- Prioritise learning interventions based on potential impact and measurable improvement, ensuring resources are directed where they will drive the greatest value.
- Oversee the progress of learning projects, facilitating cross-functional collaboration to ensure high-quality outcomes and timely delivery
- Manage relationships with external learning providers and consultants to ensure efficient, cost-effective delivery of high-quality learning solutions that meet business needs.
- Actively contribute to shared processes, tools, and best practices that enhance team effectiveness and service delivery.
- Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of learning interventions using agreed methodologies, balancing effort with expected outcomes
- Collaborate with internal communications and Learning & Development colleagues to ensure consistent messaging and visibility of learning initiatives.
Base location – Hybrid – Clear Water Court Reading
Working pattern – Monday to Friday 36 hours
Necessary requirements for the role - Travel to Walnut Court, Swindon - as required (but roughly twice a month)
What you should bring to the role
The essential criteria to help you succeed in this role is:
- Proven experience in a Learning & Development or Learning Consultant role within a complex, fast-paced organisation.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across functions and with stakeholders at all levels, including senior leadership.
- Track record of designing and delivering innovative, blended learning solutions architecture – aligned to strategic objectives
- Strong understanding of learning theory, performance consulting, and learning methodologies (e.g. digital, social, experiential).
- Excellent communication and consultancy skills
- Strong organisational and project management skills, including risk and issue tracking.
Extra qualities that would be a great fit for our team:
- Experience working in a regulated or operationally complex environment
- Experience managing external learning providers and ensuring value for money
- Relevant L&D qualification e.g. CIPD Level 5 or equivalent
- Knowledge of learning evaluation models (e.g. Kirkpatrick) and data-driven decision-making.
- Certifications in coaching, facilitation, or performance consulting
