About the role:

The Data Factory will deliver data standards, governance and a single version of the truth. This will be hosted on leading edge platforms and tooling that’s fit for purpose and stored in a secure and documented manner to protect customer data and company reputation. All this will put the intelligent insight into the hands of our people to maximise its efficiency and continue to provide excellent customer service we need to harness our data and use it to drive intelligent, insight driven decisions.

Under the direction of the Lead Data Scientist, and working closely with the Head of Data scrum masters and business stakeholders, the Junior Data Scientist will help build and manage a data science algorithms, and apply advanced analytics to help optimize process, enable fact driven decision making, reduce cost and increase resource allocation and effectiveness.

You'll act as a pathfinder and trailblazer… helping us to shape Thames Water of the future.

Drive exciting work:

  • You will get to use state of the art technology and work with machine learning algorithms to improve customer experience, grow revenue, and increase efficiency across different parts of our group - Algorithms like Random Forest, XGBoost, LSTM,KNN should make you tingle with excitement!

Get a holistic view:

  • You'll work with stakeholders and fellow data scientists under the guidance of the lead data scientist to understand the business problem, design a solution, and implement it to create a tangible outcome.
  • Your goal is to bring multiple pieces of data together to see if we can mine valuable information - Remember algorithms without the right context can’t produce actionable insight that is the reason we always ask the why’s!

Access all areas:

  • Data science needs to be underpinned by great quality data and has a close collaboration with Data Engineering, so we would want you to be an educated customer of that team.
  • Helping data governance develop the guiderails we use with the business to capture the right data at the right time with the right tools and store and care for it.
  • Just like water, data needs to flow uninhibited, needs to be clean and fit for purpose so that we can convert data to information to insight to action.
  • Knowledge of the water industry, how TW operates and where the areas of opportunity for data insight to add value and have the most impact are

To be successful you will have the following skills and experience:

A Thames Water Data Scientist is sceptical, curious, has an inquisitive mind, knows machine learning, statistics, probability, applies Scientific Method, runs experiments, is good at coding and hacking, is able to deal with IT Data Engineering and knows how to build data products!

  • A degree in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, physics, computer science or engineering.
  • Strong mathematical and statistical analysis skills are essential.
  • An understanding of and experience of applying machine learning methods
  • Experience of R,Python with the appropriate packages
  • Cloud platforms
