About the role:

 

  • Thames Water are custodians of the Natural Environment.
  • We have statutory and regulatory obligations to care for the environment and require a subject matter expert to ensure we comply with UK and EU legislation for activities carried out on our own sites and throughout the Thames Valley.  

 

Responsibilities

 

Environmental screening for Operational Projects and Incident Management

 

  • Ensure that Operational projects are legally compliant with current UK and EU legislation, Codes of Practice, and internal policies and strategies.
  • Provide technical expertise internally on incidents affecting protected and sensitive habitats.
  • Undertake site visits and relevant surveys, including protected species surveys, phase one habitat surveys, tree surveys, hedgerow surveys, biodiversity baseline surveys.
  • Act as the company’s interface with Regulators and stakeholders for projects and for incident management.

 

Invasive Non-Native Species Management

 

  • Improve awareness in Operations and the wider business about Invasive Non-Native Species through presentations, training courses, booklets, posters and site-specific INNS constraints plans
  • Ensure that key Conservation, Access and Recreation sites are compliant with the ‘Check, Clean, Dry’ principles.

 

Engagement with the wider business

 

  • Engage with Environmental Advisors from Capital Delivery to ensure environmental compliance on other projects within the business and to collate information on net gain for the biodiversity net gain dash board.
  • Generate internal and external good news stories to increase awareness, generate reputational benefits and improve relationships with stakeholders and regulators.

The jobholder will be required to undertake site visits and surveys throughout the Thames Region. Some occasional overnight and out of hours work may be involved.

Must hold a valid driving licence

To be successful you will have the following skills and experience:

  • First degree in a relevant subject (second degree and relevant professional membership, such as CIEEM). Post qualification experience desirable though not essential.
  • At least one protected species survey licence held.
  • Managerial/leadership experience in a similar sized company.
  • Good surveying skills.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in ecological assessments and planning policy.
  • Sound knowledge of UK and European biodiversity, protected site and species legislation
  • Ability to understand and interpret GIS
  • Good written, negotiation and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate ecology issues to a business audience, and business issues to an ecology audience.
  • Ability to work under their own initiative as well as be quick to learn new procedures.
  • Diplomacy and confidence to deal with people at all levels and from different professional backgrounds.
  • Willingness to learn and develop own ideas whilst taking on new challenges.
  • Experience of ecology assessments and mitigation.
  • Project and contractor management skills desirable.
  • Water industry knowledge / experience desirable.
