About the role:

We are currently seeking a Regulatory Manager - Econometrician to join our regulations department, and grow the econometric skill set as we prepare for the next price reviews. We are looking for individuals who have a strong background in econometric modelling, combined with a critical thinking approach to analysis. The team’s role is to provide insight and understanding into the delivery, operations and efficiency of our services, through the use of econometrics and statistical tools. You will report and present your finding to key stakeholders within Thames Water who have varying levels of technical understanding.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide high quality economic and econometric advice and analysis on a wide range of economic regulatory issues and communicate key findings to a wide range of audiences including senior managers and Executive Team.
  • Provide a source of economic expertise to assist the business in the analysis of areas of complexity to ensure the business makes the right decisions based on robust quantitative analysis of the issues.
  • Develop external networks to influence the development of regulation on economic regulatory issues for the benefit of the business, its customers and the environment. 
  • Develop internal networks within the business to collect, understand and develop suitable datasets for analytical purposes that help the business to allocate resources efficiently.
  • Provide analytical inputs for responses to Ofwat consultations on economic and regulatory issues.
  • Provide expert economic and quantitative advice and analysis on a range of issues to support the annual business planning cycle and to develop a strategy for the quinquennial review of price controls.

What skills are we looking for?

  • A thorough understanding of economics or econometrics or a related discipline.
  • A strong academic background in economics, maths, or related subjects or a strong track record of providing insight from analysis of data.
  • Experience of cost functions, efficiency benchmarking or financial econometrics and the ability and passion to undertake the logical and well thought out analysis.
  • Highly organised and analytical individual with experience in applied econometrics and management/analysis of large datasets and experience in at least one statistical software (preferably Stata or R, Python).
  • Excellent IT and first-class communication and presentational skills – including the ability to communicate complex technical models to non-specialists.
  • Knowledge of modern statistical techniques such as machine learning to apply on large datasets would be beneficial but not essential.  
  • Strong influencing and communication skills (written and oral), ability to think outside the box, high-level competencies in analytical, conceptual and strategic thinking.
