About the role:

Thames Water’s strategic goal is to become an energy-neutral utility company – reducing our reliance on external energy supply, increasing our energy security and providing cost certainty for customers which in turn, helps reduce our carbon emissions. We are committed to being Net Carbon zero for our operational Carbon footprint by 2030.

We are already the largest producer of renewable electricity in the UK water industry and have made a commitment to our customers to increase, year-on-year, the energy we produce to stretch our output by a minimum increase of 9% to 517 GWh by 2025. We currently consume a total of 1.6 TWh of energy per year and power is our 2nd largest operational cost at over £120m p.a.

As an Energy & Carbon Analyst, you’ll responsible for the operational and regulatory reporting of all energy and carbon, including development plans that meet the requirements of both internal and regulatory stakeholders, ensuring the plans are suitably governed and audited for accuracy and assurance.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensure accurate and detailed routine operational performance reporting (consumption, generation, cost).
  • Ensure accurate and detailed external regulatory reporting (GHG Emissions, EU ETS, ESOS, CHP QA).
  • Provide data analyses for annual industry data collection exercises such as APR, SECR and to Water UK and Ofgem, working together with internal stakeholders.
  • Provide data analyses for external stakeholders regulated requirements (RO, EUETS, CHPQA, CPS/CCL, ESOS).
  • Manage data collection for the Company’s Operational Greenhouse Gas Emissions reporting, annually and bi-annually.
  • Provide support for the Senior Energy Carbon Analyst at the subsequent external audits.
  • Provide analysis on GHG emissions to help inform the development of the business’ Net Zero Carbon ambition, and support work with internal and external stakeholders to understand and reduce our emissions.
  • Support to the Senior Energy and Carbon Analyst on the development of the Carbon Accounting Workbook for Thames Water.
  • Support the development of capital carbon accounting.
  • Work with key internal stakeholders across Thames Water to manage reporting requirements.
  • Liaise with regulatory stakeholders such as the Environment Agency and Ofgem.
  • Provide support to the Energy & Carbon Management Lead for Thames Water’s certified Energy Management System.

To be successful, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
  • Previous experience in an analyst role.
  • Excellent IT skill, strong numeric and data analytical skills.
  • Previous experience of working in the energy and/or utility industry is advantageous.
  • Good communication and strong organisational skills.
  • Confident communicating with external stakeholders (Environment Agency, Ofgem) on technical subjects.
  • Knowledge in the following subject matters are preferable:
    • Greenhouse Gas Emissions
    • Water and Wastewater Process
    • Renewables (Solar, Wind, Hydro)
    • EUETS
    • CHPQA
    • Renewables Obligation
  • Experience in using Power BI and Optima Energy Management software (or similar).
