What you will be doing

Working in the Security Operations team, your primary responsibility is helping to protect the organisation from threats and vulnerabilities. The newly created and growing Engineering function provides the Operations team with the tooling they need to perform their job and reacts to the outputs and observations of the Ops team as they respond to incidents. 

The Security function works closely together and believes in prompting exposure to the different disciplines from Governance to Architecture presenting multiple career paths either in Security or the wider Thames Water organisation. 

This role is varied and dynamic with no two days the same – however, you may find yourself:

  • Working as part of a team to ensure that corporate data and infrastructure are safeguarded from threats
  • Maintaining the security team’s tooling platforms to ensure they are always available
  • Collaborating with the security team to ensure that tooling is being used to the best of its ability
  • Maintaining Vulnerability scanning infrastructure
  • Proactively assessing potential risks and opportunities of vulnerability in the network.
  • Developing and deploying method to ensure internal and external teams maintain compliance with security policies
  • Recommending enhancements to SOC security process, procedures and policies.
  • Maintaining and developing internal KPI dashboard for highlighting system capabilities
  • Creating and maintaining knowledge base and end user focused documentation

We’re looking for you to:

Our security team at Thames Water is assuring the continuous delivery of water to our customers. For that purpose, we protect our staff and our systems from cyber threats with a set of processes and technologies and with a strong collaboration with our partners. You will contribute to these objectives by having a keen interest in technology and a decent understanding of how the things you support hang together. You may be able to author wonderfully formatted Python and PowerShell scripts but may equally be able to cobble them together from Stack Overflow! The important thing is to understand the basics and their application, especially with regards to automation and security tools. 

  • You may have been a Sysadmin, running and maintaining both a Windows estate, but have experience with Linux, you understand Active Directory, how it works and how it can be protected. 
  • Computer Networking is not an unknown to you, the OSI layer makes sense and you understand how it applies to security, you know what DNS is and how it works. 
  • You understand Firewalls, both physical and virtual, how to monitor, tune and update them, how to build and maintain the firewall rule base. 
  • Knowledge of Cyberark would be beneficial 
  • An exposure to cloud-based platforms is advantageous 
  • You will contribute to our continuous improvement to better manage cyber risks by producing documentation and proposals and present them to both technical and non-technical audiences. 

Curiosity is essential, you should be using spare and dedicated time to keep up to date with the latest threats or vulnerabilities. If you enjoy the challenge of a CTF or the challenge of setting up your own Honeypots the you will feel at home in our team.
