What you’ll be doing

This is an exciting opportunity within the Thames Water Ventures Renewable Energy Team to lead our work on developing our effluent heat resources. The role will also explore the scope for and community energy projects and the potential commercial approach for “biogas to grid”. The role will be tasked with whole-life management of opportunities from initiation through financing, delivery and active in-life commercial management. This is an opportunity for an experienced individual who has a proven track record in identifying, developing, and delivering individual energy projects and overseeing a multi-million-pound portfolio.

This role will work in a dynamic and a fast-paced environment, so the successful candidate will be comfortable working under pressure with exceptional stakeholder engagement and management skills. The ideal candidate will be someone who comes with 8-10 years of heat and renewable energy projects. They should have an excellent understanding of government policy related to energy, heat and biomethane and ideally have a strong network with regulators, central and local government. They should have previously managed the development of a comparable renewable energy portfolio and be able to bring this vision to life in the UK’s largest water company. The role will report to the Director of Renewables.

We’re looking for you to do

  • Develop a commercial partnership model for heat and a portfolio of district heating projects around the Thames Water Utilities sites and across the sewer system
  • Cover the full development cycle from green field though development to construction and operations, and put in place an approach to portfolio management
  • Manage relationships with our partners as well as Thames Water site managers, network operators, regulators and third party off-takers
  • Secure external EPC contractors to construct and operate projects, developing strong relationships with the internal construction managers
  • Explore a commercial framework and a programme of biomethane projects at Thames Water Utilities sites, with the aim of achieving projects by 2027
  • Explore a programme of community energy projects working closely with the GLA, London Councils and other key stakeholders

What Skills are we looking for?

  • Education to degree standard or equivalent qualification
  • Strong experience in developing and managing a portfolio of renewable energy projects (especially heat and district heat networks) across the built environment and with communities. Experience of biomethane and energy retail business would be advantageous
  • Proven track record of managing performance of third-party organisations
  • Strong technical understanding of renewable energy, especially heat, and community energy schemes
  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to produce material timely, and at a high quality including executive/director level audiences
  • Able to deliver material improvements and prepare consistently high-quality outputs quickly within a start-up environment
