What you will be doing

This is a great opportunity for anybody with a passion for engineering, looking to start a career in the Water Industry. It’s a chance to work towards a degree while gaining practical experience in an engineering environment, learning while you learn. You’ll get hands on experience 4 days a week and spend 1 day at Newbury college a week gaining the theoretical background to your degree.

This essential service continues to be, challenged by population growth, climate change and new legislation. We want to grow and develop our apprentices into our next generation of leaders, giving you a clear career path and commitment to your profession as an engineer. 

Joining our engineering team, you’ll undergo a formal Level 6 apprenticeship in engineering through workplace learning. You’ll study for a degree in engineering by day release at Newbury college. The role will be part of an industry leading Asset Engineering Team in Thames Water.

Apprentices will be part of the Mechanical discipline teams that help Thames Water achieve its Asset Management Planning (AMP7) ambitions to 2025 and beyond. Apprentices will learn on the job and with targeted training courses with direction and support from senior engineering personnel. The role will, as part of a continued development path, deliver the following as part of a team:

  • Support the development of engineering solutions and associated technical requirements
  • Support improvements to Thames Water Technical Asset Standards
  • Contribute to Design sign-off and provide input to technical assurance activities during the delivery, commissioning, and hand over of Assets

What do you need?

Entry requirements for this Level 6 qualification are 5 GCSE’s grade C or above and 3 A Levels, Grade C or above (or predicted grades) to include Technology, or an Engineering related subject. Please note that if you already have an Engineering degree you will not be eligible for this apprenticeship.

Whilst qualifications are important, we’re also looking for you to:

  • Have a passion for engineering including solutions and design.
  • Be a logical thinker and have a passion for finding solutions.
  • Possess the drive and motivation to manage your learning and working life.
  • Be focused, well organised, have excellent time management skills and the dedication to succeed. 
  • Be a champion for Health & Safety within the workplace for both you and your colleagues, helping us maintain our great reputation. 
  • Have great team working skills but also be able to work independently, putting customers at the heart of everything you do.
  • Preferably hold a full UK driving licence

What’s in it for you?

These roles are based at our head office in Reading, Berkshire. The starting salary will be from £20,000 with studies funded by Thames Water. You’ll also receive 24 days holiday, pension and other benefits. Travel costs are covered for travel to and from your place of study in line with our internal business expense policy.
