This is a 60 month programme with a BSc Hons Environmental Science Environmental Practitioner Apprenticeship Standard qualification following completion of Apprenticeship

You will be required to attend Kingston University Campus for face-to-face lessons one day a week, plus attend compulsory residentials which are in year 1, 3 & 4. Travel costs to university will be paid for in line with TW Business Travel Policy.

A driving license is required for this role and you must be within 40 minutes of your base location.

What you will be doing

As part of the wastewater treatment team, this apprenticeship will be providing specialist technical support to the operational managers within a specified area.  

The team have technical specialism in the sewage treatment process and support operational teams with technical investigations and analysis which help deliver on our regulatory compliance commitments in Waste Treatment, now and in the future. A key activity is to lead optimisation of process equipment to enhance resilience whilst reducing cost, to ensure that the business meets specific operational and regulatory requirements.  

The team contribute to meeting customer expectations by driving performance in accordance with operating standards and environmental, legal, regulatory obligations. 

During your apprenticeship we will develop your skills and knowledge to be able to undertake the following activities: 

  • On-site support for issues with the treatment process, including fault finding, sampling, data analysis and action planning.
  • Optimisation of process assets, such as reduction of chemical dosing or optimising activated sludge plants to reduce energy consumption.
  • Assist with investigations of sample exceedances, pollution incidents and flow compliance failures, including assisting with or personally writing reports.

What do you need?

Entry requirements for this level 6 qualifications are A levels at Grades A*-C including Mathematics and Physical Science, or their equivalent

Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C including Maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above). If you already have a degree in environmental science, you are unfortunately not eligible for this programme. 

Whilst qualifications are important, we’re also looking for you to:

  • Possess the drive and motivation to manage your learning and working life
  • Be focused, well organised, have excellent time management skills and the dedication to succeed
  • Hold a full UK driving licence
  • Have great team working skills but also be able to work independently, putting customers at the heart of everything you do
  • Be an excellent communicator and be able to converse widely with various teams
  • Able to prioritise effectively; managing the demands of study whilst being able to contribute effectively to the engineering team
  • Be a logical thinker and have a passion for finding solutions

We have 3 roles based in Kingston-Upon-Thames, Reading and Hertfordshire. The starting salary will be from £20,000 with a yearly pay review and full studies funded by Thames Water. You’ll also receive 24 days holiday, pension and other benefits. Travel costs are covered for travel to and from your university studies.
