Slow Sand Filters are used in water purification as part of the process to produce clean drinking water.

As a Slow Sand Filter Operator, you will be working in a small, dedicated team responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the Slow Sand Filters (SSF) at our Ashford Common and Kempton Water Treatment Works, to ensure the levels of clean drinking water to supply our customers in London. 

What you’ll be doing as a Slow Sand Filter Operator

  • Operation of fixed and mobile process plant and equipment including driving and operating heavy machinery.
  • Installation and removal of the Slow Sand Filter materials using specialist mobile plant and laser equipment to a high degree of accuracy by Best Operational Practice.
  • Process cleaning, front-line maintenance, and fault-finding.
  • Monitoring, collating, and reporting process data to ensure statutory, regulatory, and best operational practice compliance is achieved.
  • Undertake site-wide safety and security checks.
  • If applicable, provide Slinger/Banksman support when a mobile crane is used to lift mobile ramps in and out of filter beds.
  • Take personal responsibility for the health and safety of self and colleagues while working in line with company health and safety legislation.
  • Liaise daily with, Controllers, Maintenance Technicians, and a variety of contractors.

What you should bring to the role

  • We are looking for a team player who is prepared to work outdoors in all weathers undertaking manual tasks.
  • Must be prepared to be trained in safety procedures including Confined Space Entry.
  • Have a 7 Tonne Dumper licence or be prepared to obtain it.
  • 360 Excavator, Loading Shovel and Sand Skimmer experience would be an advantage.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy.
  • Computer data input /enquiry experience is desirable.
  • Valid driver's licence.
  • All training will be provided.
