Thames Water is looking for a Pollution Co-ordinator to join us permanently. As a Pollution Co-ordinator working in the Waste System Operations Control Room, you will be responsible for protecting our customers from flooding and the local environment from pollution, by ensuring both urgent and proactive field responses to potential issues identified on our wastewater systems. The increasing introduction of new smart tools will allow you to increase your proactive approach to your work in the future.

What you will be doing as a Pollution Co-ordinator?

  • Working in Thames Waters Wastewater Control Room, which is co-located with the Clean Water Control Room, Operational Customer Centre, and our Logistics Control Centre.
  • Assessing incoming information from e-mails, phone calls, direct messaging, and the control room systems to ensure risks are identified and responded to in priority order and high-consequence risks are escalated to the incident team as soon as possible.
  • Desktop impact assessment to understand pollution risk for reported potential pollutions from both clean water sites and wastewater sites and their associated piped and sewers networks.
  • Understanding key sewage pumping station, sewage treatment works and sewer network performance information to ensure early responses to potential pollutions.
  • Arranging urgent field responses.
  • You will co-ordinate multiple pollution responses to ensure that pollution impact is ideally prevented, or minimised and pollution recovery is achieved as soon as possible.
  • Providing notifications and updates to external stakeholders including the Environmental Agency and Natural England.
  • Accurate logging of the information received, and the decisions and actions taken.
  • Other ad hoc duties as and when required, for example taking customer calls at night.

  • Working Hours- 38 hours per week 12 hour rotating shift.

What you should bring to the role 

  • Be proactive, organised, and methodical approach to allow you to effectively manage peaks in workload that typically occur during wet weather.
  • Have the ability to accurately analyse information, make decisions and present conclusions in a time-pressured situation.
  • Have good communication and interpersonal skills for day-to-day liaison with colleagues, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Have knowledge and passion for environmental protection.
  • Be competent with IT systems, Excel, Word, and email.
  • Have the desire to learn and use new systems and technology and to support their implementation and improvement.
